The years where the job is mostly supervision, patience and knowing when to say no.
Between one and four the work stops being physical care and becomes judgement. Somebody who is warm but cannot hold a boundary produces a difficult six-year-old, and somebody strict but cold produces a quiet one, which parents often mistake for success.
It is the hardest thing to assess in a half-hour meeting, which is why our interview asks about specific incidents rather than about temperament in the abstract.
What the work involves
- Meals, naps and a day that has a shape to it
- Nursery drop-off and pick-up, and the bag being packed the night before
- Toilet training, when the family is ready to start
- Play that is actually play — outdoors, messy, and not a screen
- Keeping the child's own laundry, room and things in order
